The environment means the natural world around us. Do you know how we are getting benefits from the environment and nature? We mainly depend on trees and rainforests for our food and also rivers, lakes etc. also we are dependent on natural activities like-rain, storm etc. But nowadays nature is behaving roughly with us. It has become a worldwide issue.

It is said, “Trees are our best friends.” Trees are one of the most important elements of nature and also in our life as they play a very important role. We get oxygen from trees without which we can not stay for a few seconds, also we get nutritious fruits, flower, leaves, shelter etc. from the tree. Trees help to control the temperature of the environment.

Trees help cool the planet by absorbing carbon dioxide as part of the photosynthesis process and by evaporating water into the air. In the process water evaporates naturally from trees, increasing cloud cover and keeping temperatures cooler. Tropical rainforests are home to more than half our planet’s terrestrial animal species. Thousands of birds, insects, animals take shelter in trees and forests.

So, to get a favourable environment, there must be enough trees and rainforests in nature. But how much percentage of the forest should we have for favourable earth? According to the National forest policy, the forest area in the country is 33 %. It also planned that 60% of land in hills. 20% in plains and 33%   of geographical areas should be under the forest cover. But we, the humans are randomly cutting trees and destroying forests regularly. The Global Forest Resource Assessment, coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization, found that the world’s forest area is decreased from 31.6% of the global land area to 30.6% between 1990 and 2005, but the pace of loss has slowed in recent years.

Humans are creating industries, factories, but cutting down trees and covering rivers. Moreover, they are not planting trees as much as they are destroying them. As a result, the temperature of the world has increased 2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880, according to NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Deborah Lawrence, professor at the University of Virginia said, “Tropical deforestation delivers a double whammy to the climate—and to farmers”. Tropical destruction can cause a 0.7C temperature rise.

Cutting down trees and destroying rainforest increases temperature as carbon dioxide may not be absorbed properly. Because of this, the water level is increasing as the ice are melting due to temperature increase. Besides, many animals are being helpless and dying.

We are destroying nature at an unpredictable rate and threatening the survival of a million species which is harmful to our future. Nowadays we are facing various calamities. Recently Sri Lanka, Andaman Islands, West Bengal, Odisha, Bangladesh are affected by Super Cyclonic Storm Amphan, formed on 16 May 2020. Due to low pressure developed over the Southeastern Bay of Bengal about 1020 km (635 mi) to the southeast of Visakhapatnam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Amphan was the first super cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal since the 1999 Odisha cyclone.

The carbon dioxide in the environment is increasing day by day. In 2018, the average level of carbon dioxide was 414.7ppm (parts per million) which was increased to 415ppm in 2019 and it was 411.2ppm in 2017. It indicates we are doing forest destruction badly. Besides, we are randomly releasing harmful gases from factories which causes air pollution and increase the CO2 in the air.

Still, this is not late. We can save our environment by our consciousness. We should create the sincerity and stop destroying rainforests and cutting down trees without proper plans. The government should take proper steps in this case. Otherwise, we will suffer in the near future because we depend on the plants and animals in the rainforest.
